Marketing Strategy for Start-ups and Small Businesses

@fnet Consulting develops practical marketing strategies for start-ups and small businesses, from our base in Midrand, Gauteng. We decide who to target, what to say and which channels to use, with a budget that fits your stage, and set out a plan and measures your team can run month by month.

A plan, not a list of activities

Many small businesses market by reaction: a social post here, an advert there, a directory listing because a salesperson called. Some of it works, but nobody knows which part. A marketing strategy decides where limited money and time will have the most effect, and stops the rest.

We work from your customers and your numbers: who buys, why, how they found you and what a customer is worth. From there, the plan sets priorities by channel, the message for each audience, a budget and the few measures that show whether it is working. For a new business or product, it includes the launch plan for the first 90 days.

When businesses call us

  • Spending without results

Money goes into adverts and posts, but nobody can say what works.

  • Launching something new

A new business, product or region needs a plan to win its first customers.

  • No plan

Marketing happens when there is time, and stops when the business gets busy.

How it works

Four steps. One person accountable.

  1. Step 1

We build the plan with you: audiences, messages, channels, budget and calendar.

  4. Step 4

    Support

Monthly measures show what is working, and we can review results with you.

Questions

How much should a small business spend on marketing?

There is no single right figure. It depends on your margins, growth goals and how customers buy. We work back from what a customer is worth to set a budget you can justify.

What is a go-to-market plan?

It is the plan for taking something new to market: who you target first, what you say, how you price, which channels you use and what happens in the first months after launch. It is part of the marketing strategy for a new business or product.

How is this different from growth marketing?

Marketing strategy sets the direction, audience and message. Growth marketing is the ongoing testing and improvement of how customers are found, converted and kept once the plan is running.
